Quinta de Sao Jose is a picturesque 25 acre property in the heart of Port wine country. The dramatic slopes and proximity to the river yield abundanly ripe and complex grapes. The Brito e Cunha family purchased the property in 2005, and their son Joao with his wife Sofia run the estate. The grapes for their Vintage Port come from the oldest parcels in the property, harvested in small, 25 kilo baskets. The wine is made traditionally, foot-trodden in “lagares” and fed by gravity into oak vats for 3 years. At first impression, this port presents itself much more vinous and balanced than most. Its dried fig and violet aromas lead to a rich, yet not overly dense palate, with gorgeous cocoa undertones and velvety tannins framing it rather nicely. The absolute perfect end of the meal wine, specially paired with ripe, blue veined cheeses.
