Colombera & Garella is one of the new projects from Cristiano Garella, the Alto Piemontese wünderkind who made the wines at Tenute Sella (Lessona) through 2013. Here Cristiano teams up with his long-time friend Giacomo Colombera, who has been growing winegrapes in Bramaterra since the early 1990s. The Colombera’s vineyards are at 350-400 meters in the DOCs of Bramaterra and Coste della Sesia, just west of Gattinara and Ghemme in northern Piemonte. Soils are high-acid and volcanic, ranging from reddish-brown porphyritic sand in Bramaterra to yellow sand in Coste della Sesia. Farming is lotta integrata, with only copper, sulfur, and natural fertilizer being added. Fermentation is with native yeasts, and aging is in used barriques. Total production is about 12,000 bottles per year.
